Conceptualizing and measuring psychological resilience: What can we learn from physics?

نویسندگان

چکیده

The number of resilience conceptualizations in psychology has rapidly grown, which confuses what actually means. This is problematic, because the conceptualization typically guides measurements, analyses, and practical interventions employed. most popular psychological equate it with ability to (1) resist negative effects stressors, (2) “bounce back” from and/or (3) grow stressors. In this paper, we review these three argue that they reflect different concepts. supported by important lessons engineering physics, where such concepts are clearly differentiated precise mathematical underpinnings. Against background, outline why should be conceptualized measured terms process returning previous state following a stressor (i.e., bouncing back). By establishing clearer language related processes, measurements research practice can targeted more precisely. • Different have confused (not). Resisting, back, or growing stressors dominant Knowledge physics helps distinguish fundamentally Resilience as back Conceptual clarity leads better-targeted measures interventions.

What can we learn from noise? — Mesoscopic nonequilibrium statistical physics —

Mesoscopic systems - small electric circuits working in quantum regime - offer us a unique experimental stage to explorer quantum transport in a tunable and precise way. The purpose of this Review is to show how they can contribute to statistical physics. We introduce the significance of fluctuation, or equivalently noise, as noise measurement enables us to address the fundamental aspects of a ...

What Can We Learn from 21 Years of School Poisonings in New Zealand?

Background: Childhood poisoning is a significant international health concern. Very little is known about trends in exposures within schools and preschools. The objectives of this study were to investigate the data recorded by the New Zealand National Poisons Centre (NPC) on these types of exposures over a 21 year period (1989 to 2009) and to determine trends and propose strategies to reduce th...

What we can learn from atmospheric neutrinos

Physics potential of future measurements of atmospheric neutrinos is explored. Observation of ∆m221 driven sub-dominant effects and θ13 driven large matter effects in atmospheric neutrinos can be used to study the deviation of θ23 from maximality and its octant. Neutrino mass hierarchy can be determined extremely well due to the large matter effects. New physics can be constrained both in stand...

What can we learn from Europe?

The European Society of Cardiology has produced guidelines for the treatment of acute myocardial infarction as well as for chronic heart failure and for the use of beta blockers and angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors. These documents provide clear evidence and strength of recommendations for the secondary prevention of complications after a myocardial infarction. The identification of hea...
